Understanding RLS is the first step to getting relief for your symptoms

To diagnose Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), doctors look for features like an urge to move the legs, uncomfortable sensations in the legs or other limbs, and symptoms that start or become worse while resting. But people with RLS often experience related symptoms—including disturbed sleep. Indeed, disturbed sleep is often the reason a patient with RLS will seek medical care.

The uncomfortable sensations that occur mostly in the legs can be described as itching, pulling, gnawing, and the creepy-crawlies.

RLS can be difficult to diagnose

There is currently no lab test that can confirm the presence or absence of RLS. This can make RLS difficult to diagnose. Most people experiencing the symptoms of moderate-to-severe primary RLS seek medical care. Typically, a person will visit a primary care doctor who may diagnose RLS and recommend treatment. Or the primary care doctor may refer the patient to a more specialized doctor such as a neurologist, a sleep specialist, or a pain specialist. These doctors specialize in different aspects of RLS.

  • Neurologists – RLS is a nervous system disorder and neurologists have special training in treating these disorders
  • Sleep specialists – Sleep disruptions can be one of the most troublesome symptoms of RLS. RLS patients suffering sleep disturbances may see a sleep specialist for their experience in treating sleep disturbances
  • Pain specialists – RLS patients commonly experience uncomfortable sensations in their legs and possibly other limbs. When these sensations are more severe, patients may see a pain specialist for their special training in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating different types of pain
